Biography: Marita Lappalainen was born in 1948 in Tottijärvi. She works and lives in Tampere, Finland. She graduated obtaining a Master's Degree in Arts (majoring in the Finnish Language) from the University of Tampere in 1982. She is a freelance artist and a Member of the Finnish Association of Designers Ornamo. Marita has participated in many solo exhibitions, including the “Käsin käsitän” in Jokioinen, Finland (2018); the “Asun tässä lähellä” in Kuhmoinen, Finland (2017); and the “Form and Surface of Textile” exhibition in the Murmansk Region Art Museum in Russia (2013). She participated in group exhibitions: the “Celebration” exhibition during the 20th International Minitextile exhibition in Bratislava, Slovakia (2018); the 7th European Quilt-Triennial in Heidelberg, Germany (2018); the 6th Riga International Textile and Fibre Art Triennial in Riga, Latvia (2018); the “PISTOT” exhibition in Helsinki, Finland (2018); and the “New Quilting” in Penrith, UK in 2017. The artist was honoured with many awards, including a 2nd prize at the “Art Quilt section” in Birmingham, UK (2014); and the prize for innovation in large format at the 5th European Quilt Triennial in Heidelberg, Germany in 2012.
